Our Story
M & S Maples is a family-owned and operated business that has been producing maple syrup for over five generations! The Spaulding/Wetherbee farm in Fletcher, Vermont has been in the family since the early 1800s, making it one of the oldest family-held farms in the state. It is also one of the last working farms still held within a single family.
The original 482-acre farm was split between three Spaulding family members - Mike, his father John (who passed away in 2016), and Mike's aunt Rhoda. The farm was inherited by John's parents, Wesley and Ardelle, who obtained the other shares of the farm by unanimous vote from Wesley's siblings upon their father Emerson's death in 1966.
The original sugar house had its final boil in March 2016 by Mike's father, John. By the spring of 2016 Mike and his wife, Sandy, had finished building a new sugar house on their property with an initial 2,100 taps and expanded to over 5,000 by 2018. In addition, the family raises and sells select beef, pigs and chickens to keep the historic farm traditions and its land operational.
Mike has dedicated his life to preserving the legacy of his family, particularly his father and grandfather. He understands the importance of honoring their memory and ensuring that their contributions are not forgotten. Through his hard work and dedication, Mike is keeping his family's legacy alive for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
Mike and Sandy hold family values close to their hearts. They have been able to keep the farm and maple sugaring business running smoothly with the help of their loved ones including Mike's father-in-law Wayne, stepsons Aaron, Tyler, Logan, and their significant others, along with Sandy's sister, nephews and family friends.
